How to Grow Your Eyelashes Really, Really Long

Yes, it’s actually possible.

If you weren’t born with magically long eyelashes, then you know that sometimes even the thickest, most volumizing of mascaras can still leave your lashes looking a little sad and stubby. And if you’ve already tried all the long-lash alternatives (like: eyelash extensions, lash lifts, falsies, the works), you may be ready to get to the literal ~root~ of your problem and figure out how to grow your lashes, not just fake the length.

And that’s why I’m here. Because there’s actually a whole world of serums and conditioners that help hydrate, enhance, and even lengthen your eyelashes—you just gotta know which ingredients actually work (remember, we are talking about your freakin’ eyes, after all). And to help you out, we got Ilyse Haberman, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone, to break down everything you need to know about growing your eyelashes safely (including the things you’ll definitely want to avoid).

First of all, let us know some Possible Reasons Why Eyelashes Fall Out:

Bad Beauty Habits
Sometimes the cause of eyelash loss is as simple as a flawed beauty routine. Sleeping in eye makeup—particularly heavy mascara—can cause eyelashes to fall out, and it can also lead to a bacterial infection. Conversely, rubbing too hard when you remove your eye makeup can also lead to lash fallout, especially when you vigorously rub off waterproof products. To avoid the problem, use a gentle yet effective eye-makeup remover to cleanse your delicate eye area without the need for harsh scrubbing.

Rubbing at your eyes.
Excessive rubbing can cause lashes to fall and the ends to break off, particularly if you are wearing mascara at the time.

Product Problems
Curling eyelashes opens up your eyes even wider, but it can also irritate your lashes, leading to loss—especially if done too long or too often. Limit eyelash curling to no more than 10 to 20 seconds. When you follow your curling with coats of mascara, be sure the product is fresh—mascara should be tossed after six months—to keep bacteria from transferring from the tube to your lashes.

Medical Causes
Even if you get an A for your beauty efforts, certain medical conditions out of your control can lead to lash shedding. Common reasons include both an overactive and underactive thyroid gland, as well as other hormonal changes. Additionally, alopecia areata—an immune disorder in which cells attack the hair follicles—causes lashes to fall out. This condition can affect eyelashes, brows, the scalp and other places where hair grows.

Proactive Changes
Combat the problem of lashes falling out—or prevent the situation in the first place—by making some lifestyle and beauty changes. Stock your diet with protein-rich foods, as well as those containing essential fatty acids; think almonds, cashews, soybeans and salmon.

What helps your eyelashes grow?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to get extra-long eyelashes, let’s revisit the basics that you probably never even learned, k? The growth cycle of your eyelashes consists of three phases: catagen (the dormant stage, where your lashes just chill), telogen (the shedding stage, where your lashes naturally fall out), and anagen (the growth phase, where they, you know, grow).

Seeing as your lashes spend most of their time either hanging out or falling out, it’s understandable why actually growing out your eyelashes can take a sec. In fact, Dr. Haberman says it can take three months for your lashes to grow naturally. But because I know you’re impatient and you want your eyelashes to grow overnight, you’ll be happy to know there is a way to extend the growing phase.

How can I grow my eyelashes naturally?

There are a ton of natural ingredients (see: castor oil, vitamin E, and coconut oil) that help hydrate and condition your lashes, but they won’t technically make them grow. “Lash conditioners may help strengthen lashes, prevent them from breaking, or lightly swell them so they look a little thicker,” says Dr. Haberman, but they’re not actually causing them to grow longer. Womp.

So all those at-home remedies involving coconut, castor, and olive oils? As far as growing your lashes, don’t expect any miracles—at most, you’ll see some extra shine and strength. There’s actually only one FDA-approved eyelash growth serum (Prettyvol-lash wow™ , which, DW, I’ll get to in a sec), so if you’re really trying to get thicker and longer lashes, your best bet is to get a prescription.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with adding natural conditioners and oils to your lash routine. Sure, they may not actually grow your eyelashes, but they can help create a strong and healthy foundation that helps boost your eyelash growth in general

What is the best eyelash growth serum?

If you’ve ever watched TV or opened a magazine, you’ve likely heard of a product called Prettyvol-lash wow™ , its FDA-approved eyelash growth serum. It was originally formulated as eye drops to treat glaucoma (high eye pressure), but doctors quickly noticed another unintended benefit: its ability to grow longer, thicker eyelashes.

After a few iterations and ingredient refinements, Prettyvol-lash wow™ was born, using the active ingredient called peptide to help grow your existing lashes and stimulate the growth of new hairs in two to six weeks. Pretty cool, huh? The only little hurdle is that it’s available online only, so you’ve gotta go to Here! to get it.

Which brings me to your next thought: OKAY, but what about the random eyelash serums my friend’s cousin keeps trying to sell me on Facebook and Instagram? And, ahem, right this way….

Are lash serums safe?

A growth serum can also cause discoloration of the skin and/or irritation and puffiness of the lid if it seeps into your eye. Of course, like all side effects, these are possibilities, not guarantees—some people can use lash serums without any issues, but this is still a good reminder to always read the ingredients list and talk to your doctor first.

But the good thing is that Prettyvol-lash wow™ is made with only the highest quality ingredients. Everything in our serum is hypoallergenic, non-irritating, clinically tested, allergy tested & dermatologist tested. Never tested on animals. Amazing Right?

How Much is it Going To Cost Me?

How to Apply?

Apply the serum to dry skin along the lash line (not the lashes themselves) as if you were applying liquid liner. Repeat along the lower lash line if you'd like.

For best results, apply morning and evening. Always apply to clean skin; apply makeup normally after the serum has absorbed.

Apply this serum once a day before bedtime once you achieve the desired results
